Counsellors
Staffcare’s network of qualified and experienced
counsellors means that clients are able to access counselling
locally. All have been recruited through professional
associations or from participation in one of the numerous
training courses
that Staffcare organises throughout Ireland. Some counsellors
hear of our service and make direct contact seeking
employment. The selection process includes checking
references from professional and personal sources, reviewing
professional qualifications and experience, and examination
of personal skills to empathise with clients. They are
required to hold a professional qualification, to have
undertaken further training in Counselling and be able
to demonstrate that they have had supervised counselling
experience working with a range of client groups.
The majority of our Counsellors have also undertaken
training in short–term counselling methods, e.g.,
Solution Focused Brief Therapy. Staffcare also expects
all of its counsellors to avail of our Critical Stress
Management Courses. Many also possess additional professional
training and expertise in areas such as relationship
problems, bereavement counselling, trauma support, mediation
and work with children or adolescents.
Staffcare provides additional training for professional
development needs which may be identified through Supervision
or in response to new legislation or research. A regular
Team Briefing is sent to all counsellors and recent
research articles accompany this communication on issues
of good practice from a variety of Professional Journals.
All are accredited with the Irish Association for Counselling
and Psychotherapy [IACP],
or are working towards accreditation with the British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy [BACP].
Counsellors undertake regular supervision of their
work. This personal development and case supervision
is in addition to the management supervision of their
practice provided by Staffcare. Supervision is essential
in all aspects of the counselling process, providing
both an opportunity for reflection and professional
development for the counsellor and additional protection
for the client. Such supervision is necessary for the
maintenance of the Accreditation status of our counsellors.
